Aangezien het gebruik van grote hoeveelheden inert gas in een bedrijf duur kan zijn, is het belangrijk het verbruik aan inert gas zoveel mogelijk te beperken. Voor de meeste stoffen is het niet nodig om de hele atmosfeer te vervangen door b.v. stikstof om inertisering te bekomen. Vandaar dat het essentieel is om de kritische gassamenstelling voor het inertiseren van het stof in kwestie te kennen.
